Fils de pasteur, Reinhard “donna sa vie au Seigneur” à l’âge de neuf ans, et “reçut un appel” pour la mission en Afrique.

Il étudia à l’école biblique du pays de Galles à Swansea et fut ensuite pasteur en Allemagne, durant sept ans, dans une église pentecôtiste de Hambourg.

Il commença son œuvre missionnaire en Afrique en 1967 au Lesotho. Il l’élargit par la suite à tout le continent africain. Il organisa des réunions dans une tente qui pouvait recevoir 800 personnes. Mais comme les foules grandissaient, il fallut acheter une tente plus grande.

Il est également possible de cesser d’écouter la voix de la conscience, comme l’ont fait certaines personnes d’après les Écritures : « En refusant d’écouter leur bonne conscience, ils ont causé le naufrage de leur foi. » ( 1 Timothée 1.19 )

It is also possible to stop from listening to the conscience, just as some did, according to the Scriptures : “holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.” (NIV ; 1 Timothy 1:19).

There was once a man who cheated his own company and couldn’t find peace in his conscience. In order to feel relieved, he wrote to the company he wronged : “Here is a part of the money I owe you. If I cannot sleep tonight, I will add the remaining part.”

Un homme qui avait un jour fraudé n’arrivait plus à être en paix avec sa conscience. Afin de se sentir soulagé, il écrivit à l’entreprise à laquelle il avait porté préjudice : « Je vous remets une part de l’argent que je vous dois. Si je ne parviens pas encore à dormir cette nuit, j’ajouterai une seconde part.”

Dieu a placé une conscience en nous afin de nous juger et de nous parler au travers d’elle. Mais la conscience peut être manipulée et, dans certains cas extrêmes, être utilisée par le diable. C’est pour cela qu’il est vital de savoir à qui appartient notre conscience et à qui elle est soumise. Dietrich Bonhoeffer énonce: « Notre conscience doit être uniquement dominée par Jésus – Christ ».

God has placed a conscience within us so as to judge us and talk to us through it. But in some extreme cases, the conscience can be manipulated and used by the devil. That is why it is crucial to know whom our conscience truly belongs, and whom it ought to be subjected to. Dietrich Bonhoeffer said : “Our conscience must be controlled by Jesus Christ alone.”

It may happen that our conscience becomes dull with time : “Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.” (NIV ; Ephesians 4:19).
