“Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.” Leviticus 19:31
A Zimbabwean mother killed her baby son and sold one of his ears for $20 (£13) to a Mozambican witch doctor, police have confirmed. Christine Hofisi, 21, from Chipinge near the Mozambique border, is accused of strangling the 18-month-old child before removing his left ear.
The body of the little boy, who was named by local papers as Edmore, was found bushes near to the woman’s home by a neighbour who alerted the police.
Detectives believe that the boy’s ear was sold for $20 to a healer over the border known as Maheza.
He is currently on the run, having been arrested on suspicion of carrying out a series of ritual murders following the discovery of 11 human skulls at his home.
Human body parts, but more commonly those of animals, are mixed with potions and used by sangomas, or traditional healers, to cure ailments and bring fortune to the user.
Deputy national police spokesman Oliver Mandipaka said police were questioning Hofisi and would travel to Mozambique to try to find Maheza.
“We can confirm that Christine Hofisi strangled her 18-month-old son to death and cut off his left ear,” Mr Mandipaka said.
“Hofisi sold the ear to a traditional healer notorious for ritual murders in Mozambique. She sold the ear for $20 but was given $10 with the balance to be paid later.”
Mandipaka said Maheza was facing criminal charges in Mozambique after being found with 11 human skulls, but he skipped bail and is now believed to be living in the border area.
