A 2nd chance to protect life

Pro-lifers are looking for support for a bill that came before Congress from an unexpected direction. When the healthcare reform measure, which includes funding for abortion, was about to come for a vote, Sister Carol Keehan of the Catholic Health Association surprised pro-lifers and announced her support for it.
“Sister Carol came in at the very last minute on her dark horse and gave all these self-described pro-life Catholics cover to vote the wrong way on abortion healthcare based on an executive order,” recalls Susan B. Anthony List (SBA) spokesperson Marjorie Dannenfelser.
“It was a complete and utter sacrifice of the pro-life position, and she led them all over the cliff in the wrong direction,” she laments.
The SBA spokesperson says that now that the Protect Life Act, which would bar abortion funding with tax dollars, has been introduced, pro-life groups are asking Keehan to support that, as it conforms to Catholic thinking.
“So this is her opportunity to make good on her commitment to protect the most vulnerable,” Dannenfelser decides.
Though Keehan has yet to respond to SBA’s request, the group intends to keep knocking on her door until she answers.
