White House: Obama obviously Christian, prays every day

By Natasha Mozgovaya

Comment comes in wake of poll showing nearly 1in every 5 Americans believes that Obama is actually a Muslim.

‫The White house responded Thursday to poll indicating that Americans are increasingly convinced – incorrectly – that President Barack Obama is a Muslim, and a growing number are thoroughly confused about his religion

“The President is obviously a Christian. He prays every day. He communicates with his religious advisor every single day. There’s a group of pastors that he takes counsel from on a regular basis. And his faith is very important to him, but it’s not something that is a topic of conversation every single day,” White House Deputy Spokesman Bill Burton said.

“I just think people are focused on other issues and not paying all that much attention to exactly what the President does with his spirituality,” Burton added.

“You could always play the “would-of, could-of, should-of,” but the President’s top priority here isn’t making sure that Americans know what a devout Christian he is, it’s making sure that we’re getting the economy on track and we’re creating jobs in this country,” Burton said.

The survey, conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center and its affiliated Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life found that nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim, up from the 11 percent who said so in March 2009, according to a poll released Thursday. The proportion who correctly says he is a Christian is down to just 34 percent.

The largest share of people, 43 percent, said they don’t know his religion, an increase from the 34 percent who said that in early 2009.
